Surgical Scrub Technician

The Surgical Scrub Technician Program is a one-semester program designed for students who hold a current license in practical/vocational nursing or registered nursing and who wish to be trained to work in the operating room as a surgical scrub. Classes are taught in a combination of day and evening. Students receive 90 contact hours of instruction in the classroom and lab and 135 contact hours in the clinical setting.

Program Outline:

First 8 Weeks
Tuesday – Hope Classroom
Thursday – Texarkana Classroom
2 Weeks – Clinical Observations

Last 8 Weeks
Tuesday – Day Clinical
Wednesday – Hope Classroom
Thursday – Day Clinical

Classes are rotated on both the Hope and Texarkana campuses. Students are required to attend all classes on both campuses.

Entrance Requirements:

  1. Submit verification of licensure in Practical/Vocational Nursing or Registered Nursing. Current licensure required for acceptance.
  2. UAHT application for admission.
  3. Submit a transcript for high school, General Education Diploma (GED), and any college work.
  4. Provide proof of immunization against measles (2) and rubella (1) for students born after January 1, 1957, who plan to enroll for full-time coursework.
  5. Provide proof of current TB skin test.
  6. Provide Hepatitis B waiver or proof of vaccination.
  7. Provide proof of Flu vaccination when vaccine is available.
  8. Provide up-to-date CPR Certification.
  9. Surgical Scrub Technician Program Application.


SCRU1403 Fundamentals of Surgical Scrub Nursing
The course covers topics such as safe surgical environment, surgical asepsis and sterile technique, utilization and care of surgical instrumentation and equipment, Intraoperative patient care, surgical site management. (3,0,3)

SCRU1501 Surgical Scrub Nursing Procedures
This course provides hands-on practice and integration of theoretical concepts into a controlled setting. Essential principles and techniques are practiced which include surgical asepsis, surgical techniques, surgical instrumentation and equipment, prepping and draping the patient, and surgical site management. SCRU1603 Surgical Scrub Nursing Clinical
Under the supervision of a preceptor, the student provides direct patient care in the surgical setting. Students are exposed to a variety of surgical experiences progressing room observational scrub to second scrub to first scrub. (0,19,3)
