Yesterday morning, a group of community representatives nestled into the Johnny Rapert Auditorium on the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope campus to hear the presentation from students who have been a part of the UACCH iServe program this summer. Through the iServe program, students had the unique opportunity to build a portfolio of public service and marketable skills.
Students enrolled in six credit hours:
ENGL 1013 Composition I
SPCH 1313 Principles of Speech
Students also participated in an exciting twenty hours of volunteer work for a non-profit organization here in the community. In addition to volunteering, students logged their experiences in a journal and provided some type of writing service to the organization. During the first summer term Lindsey Fuller, Emily Winer, and Shelbi Booker all got involved in the community by volunteering and they shared those experiences with the audience at the Rapert Auditorium.
Lindsey Fuller volunteered for the United States Department of the Interior, National Park Service at the Bill Clinton birthplace home here in Hope. Through her work there she assisted with tours and daily activities. She also helped find questions and create the layout for an upcoming Quiz Bowl competition to be held in conjunction with Hope High School.
Emily Winer volunteered with the Southwest Arkansas Arts Council. She designed and developed a Power Point presentation for the arts council director to use at an upcoming event.
Shelbi Booker volunteered for the South Arkansas Regional Archives in Historic Washington. There she helped to document the Boulware estate artifacts.
All three ladies enjoyed the opportunity to learn and serve. Their stories and experiences help depict the importance and value of volunteering for local organizations. For more information about iServe, visit the college website at www.uacch.edu.
