Kathleen Schooley McLarty and Dr. Phil McLarty, of Hope, Arkansas, recently established the Kathleen Schooley McLarty Endowed Scholarship at the University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana (UAHT). The endowment is established in honor of Kathleen “Kathy” Schooley McLarty. “Kathy’s story needs to be preserved and passed on to others,” said her husband, Dr. Phil McLarty.
For many years, Kathy Schooley was the go-to person at First National Bank (FNB) of Hope for those hoping to build a house, buy a new car, or take out a short-term loan. With her bright smile and compassionate heart, she never failed to offer encouragement and support in helping others meet their financial needs and realize their dreams. Her background in banking began in 1973 when she walked into FNB as a recently married 23-year-old young professional and applied for a job. From entry-level secretary, she worked her way up through the ranks for over 36 years until retiring in 2010 as the Senior Vice-President.
In addition to her banking career, she devoted herself to her husband, Pat; her children, Shannon and Matt; served as a board member of the Hope-Hempstead County Chamber of Commerce, co-founded the Hope chapter of Relay for Life, taught AWANA classes, and was a faithful member of Garrett Memorial Baptist Church. In retirement, she continues to serve others as a volunteer for church and charitable causes, as well as supporting her clergy husband, Phil, at the Horatio and Winthrop United Methodist Churches.
“This scholarship seeks to inspire UAHT students to see the possibilities available to them and to reach their potential, whatever their background, age, or station in life,” said Kathy.
