Faculty Spotlight – April

April 11, 2018

Maria McKeehan, Math Instructor

1. Where are you from and where did you graduate college?
I got my undergrad at Lyon College and my Masters at TAMU-T. I’m from all over, but I graduated High School at Hope High.

2. Why did you choose education as a career?
I wanted to be able to inspire students the way some of my professors inspired me and got under my skin in a loving way.

3. What do you LOVE about your classes at UAHT?
I love the diversity of our students. I never know who is going to walk into my classroom or office next and I love that I get to help them in more ways than simple math. I have the opportunity to get to know them and hopefully give them in a boost in confidence in their talents in math that they never realized that they already had.

4. What are your favorite hobbies? What do you do to relax?
I love spending time with my dogs, kids, and family.

5. What is your motto for your class?
If you don’t get it the first time, there is always another chance. After all, Thomas Edison took 1000 times to invent the light bulb. Hopefully, we will have you thinking outside the box to get you where you need to be there LONG before that.

6. What is something you wish you would have known when you were in college? Do you have any advice you want to pass along to students?
I wish I had known the value of finding a study partner in each class that I was in. It took me a while to figure that out in undergrad, but my grades Significantly went up after that.

7. What is your favorite snack?
payday candy bar

3. What do you LOVE about your classes at UAHT?
I love the genuineness of the students. They are a very open and honest group.

4. What are your favorite hobbies? What do you do to relax?
In my spare time, I surf the internet, hang out with friends and family, work out, and attend sporting events. I play games to relax.

Everyone can learn math.

6. What is something you wish you would have known when you were in college? Do you have any advice you want to pass along to students?
I wish I had known the value of a good study group. As the saying goes, “two heads are better than one.” My advice would be to not overload yourself, put forth your best effort, and . It may be difficult for a while, but it will be worth it in the end.

7. What is your favorite snack?
Mixed nuts.
