John Hollis

Q. Where are you from and where did you graduate college?
A. I was born in Camden, Arkansas and my undergraduate degrees are from Baylor University, Waco Texas BA History (1979) MA History (1981) and my law school degree is from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville JD (1984)

Q. Why did you choose education as a career?
A. I didn’t, it chose me. I started teaching night classes as an adjunct because the idea of teaching had always interested me. I found out that I liked it much more than practicing law and when an opportunity arose that allowed me to choose between a law practice and teaching, I chose teaching.

Q. What do you LOVE about your classes at UAHT?
A. How different they all are. I would have assumed before I started teaching that teaching the same class or subject matter would mean that the classes themselves were basically the same. How wrong I was! Each class, each semester offers new challenges and opportunities – some inspiring, some perplexing.

Q. What are your favorite hobbies? What do you do to relax?
A. My wife and I like to travel when we can. I like to work in the yard, I love to read, and my guilty pleasure is watching all of the true crime shows on television.

Q. What is your motto for your class?
A. School will keep you young. (For me) It is better to travel hopefully than to arrive. (For the students)

Q. What is something you wish you would have known when you were in college? Do you have any advice you want to pass along to students?
A. That the future is seldom a linear path. Things are going to change in life, some we have control over some we do not. The point of getting a higher education is so that you can traverse those non-linear paths and yet continue on your travels (hopefully – see quote above). College is a great environment to expand your horizons and think about things you’ve never thought of before.

Q. What is your favorite snack?
A. It’s a toss-up between popcorn and pretzels. But always with an ice cold Coca-Cola!

Q. Where are you from and where did you graduate college?
A. I am from Prescott. I have a BFA and MLA degree from Henderson State University.

Q. Why did you choose education as a career?
A. There are many educators in my family. My grandfather was a teacher in Nevada county in the early 1900s. I have several aunts and a sister who were also teachers. I didn’t really choose education as my first career choice though. My background is graphic design, but I do enjoy teaching.

Q. What do you LOVE about your classes at UAHT?
A. Seeing the light come on when a students first understands something. Introducing something to a student that sparks an interest. Sharing my love of art with students who have had limited or no exposure to art before.

Q. What are your favorite hobbies? What do you do to relax?
A. My husband and I own a cattle farm, so there’s not much relaxation at my house, but I do enjoy ranching and sometimes I do oil paintings. Photography is also a hobby.

Q. What is your motto for your class?
A. No talent/no problem (drawing and painting classes)

Q. What is something you wish you would have known when you were in college? Do you have any advice you want to pass along to students?
A. You don’t have to know what you want to be when you grow up when you’re 18 years old! It’s okay to explore a variety of subjects. Making a lot of money is great, but having a job you enjoy is much more important.

Q. What is your favorite snack?
A. Dark chocolate
