Q. Where are you from and where did you graduate college?
A. I am from Royal, Arkansas (west of Hot Springs). I earned both my BA and MLA in English at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia.

Q. Why did you choose education as a career?
A. I did not actually choose it; it chose me! I was briefly a secondary education major as an undergrad, but I didn’t feel it was the right fit. I had no idea what I was going to be when I grew up! When I was completing my last semester as an undergrad, one of my professors encouraged me to enroll in graduate school, so I did. I was also fortunate to be selected as a graduate assistant tutor in Henderson’s Writing Center. I really enjoyed tutoring; working with the students was extremely rewarding. The Writing Center GA’s at Henderson also teach the Basic Writing classes, so during my second semester of grad school, I was assigned to teach two sections of the class. I had never taught before, but I learned as I went. So as they say, the rest is history! That was ten years ago. I can’t imagine myself in any other career field.

Q. What do you LOVE about your classes at UAHT?
A. It’s fun to get to know the students. They have such diverse backgrounds and experiences that they bring with them to the classroom. I love to watch them succeed. (Graduation day is my favorite day of the whole year!) It’s inspirational to see them overcome challenges and push themselves to do things they didn’t think they were capable of.

Q. What are your favorite hobbies? What do you do to relax?
A. I like to visit my family and friends, do crafts, play with my dogs, read, go shopping at flea markets, and travel.

Q. What is your motto for your class?
A. I can think of two: “It’s going to be OK! You can do it” and “Come to class, do the work, ask questions if you’re stuck.”

Q. What is something you wish you would have known when you were in college? Do you have any advice you want to pass along to students?
A. It’s OK if you don’t know what you want to major in, or if you change your major. You should explore lots of different fields. Take time to figure out what inspires you, and don’t stress; you will find what you are meant to do. Make friends along the way. Attend as many college and community functions as you can, and make connections with positive people.

Q. What is your favorite snack?
A. It is hard to pick just one. Anything sweet is good!
